SuperSession
A16 – The Ultimate Measure: Aligning Workforce Strategy to Accelerate Business Strategy During an Uncertain Market with Certain Talent Challenges
Language: English | Track: Leadership & Talent
Schedule: 10:00 am to noon
Please note that this presentation starts earlier than the other concurrent sessions in Block A.

Jeff Joerres, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer at Manpower Inc.
Milwaukee, Wisconsin, United States of America

The global economic downturn had an unprecedented effect on the world of work and has led many employers into uncharted territory. Organizations must ensure that their best talent was strategically positioned in business-critical areas. This requires a flexible approach to talent management, closely aligned to business key objectives, and a long-term approach to talent capabilities across the organization, ensuring that essential intellectual capacity was attracted and retained. But this is not easy, as there are so many forces pushing in conflicting directions.

As we prepare for the post-recession New Normal, there are several key drivers of change that need to be understood in order to successfully navigate through uncertainty:

  • The Talent Mismatch is deepening as the working age population declines and the nature of work changes. These significant shifts in talent supply are transforming the global labor market.
  • Individual Choice will be exercised by those with the skills that are most in demand, requiring companies to think differently about how jobs are defined and how they will attract and retain scarce talent.
  • Technological Revolutions have the power to change where, when and how we work, enabling organizations to be more agile and innovative – if they know how to leverage it.
  • Rising Customer Sophistication requires businesses to work in a new way, driven by innovation and delivering greater value and efficiency.

The world of work is changing, and talent will become the competitive differentiator… Are you ready?

The session will include a panel discussion with prominent HR leaders from various industries who will share their insights and experience with aligning workforce strategies to accelerate business strategies. Moderated by Matthew Bishop, US Business Editor at The Economist, the panel will include:

  • Gene Lai, Vice President of Operations, Steelcase
  • Luc St-Pierre, CIRC, Vice President of Human Resources, Pfizer
  • Lyne Martel, Acting Senior Vice President, Vice President of Human Resources, Rio Tinto
  • Dick Antoine, President of National Academy of Human Resources and former Global Human Resources Officer of Procter & Gamble
  • Libby Sartain, former Chief People Officer, Yahoo! Inc. & Southwest Airlines

Workplace application – Revealing unique Manpower research, this session will help HR executives prepare their workforce and excel post recession. It will explain the many and varied factors in the current world of work that need to be considered when developing contemporary work models and people practices, including how talent capabilities can help achieve strategic business goals.

SuperSession
B15 - Leadership Insight: Going Beyond the Dehydrated Language of Management
Language: English | Track: Leadership & Talent
Schedule: 1:45 pm to 3:30 pm
Don’t miss this exclusive SuperSession with distinguished professor Nancy Adler!
Please note that this session ends later than the other concurrent sessions in Block B.
Nancy J. Adler, S. Bronfman Chair in Management at McGill University & Artist
Montreal, Canada

“Only by investing in the artistry of our humanity will we create the peaceful, prosperous planet we deserve.”

Society yearns for a leadership of possibility, for a leadership based more on hope, aspiration, and innovation than on the replication of historical patterns of constrained pragmatism. Luckily, such a leadership is possible today. For the first time in history, leaders can work backward from their aspirations and imagination rather than forward from the past. The gap between what people can imagine and what they can accomplish has never been smaller.

21st century leadership demands anticipatory and passionate creativity. It requires three different types of courage: the courage to see reality, the courage to envision possibility and the courage to inspire others to bring possibility back to reality.

The time is right for artistic imagination to co-create the leadership that the world deserves… The time is right for the cross-fertilization of the arts and leadership… and HR professionals have a crucial role in leading this needed change!

Join us for an exclusive in-depth SuperSession with Professor Nancy Adler, and discover what has changed so dramatically that business executives, professors, consultants and publishers are increasingly turning to artists and artistic processes to guide their thinking and action!

Workplace Application – Designing options worthy of implementation calls for levels of inspiration and passionate creativity that, until recently, have been more the domain of artists and artistic processes than the domain of most managers. This exclusive SuperSession will raise HR professionals’ awareness to the cross-fertilization of the arts and leadership!

Nancy Adler is also a visual artist. Her paintings are held in private collections in Asia, the Americas, and Europe.
Her next art exhibition will be open from September 1 to 19 at Galerie MX in Montreal (333, Viger Street). She invites the HR professionals who are in the Montreal area to feel warmly invited to the exhibition – doubly so because it combines art and leadership – exactly as does the talk she will be giving at the Congress.

Learn more about the upcoming "Leadership Insight journal", which also echoes the theme of her session (and exhibition).

  • les traits qui distinguent l’élite de la masse et les moteurs à la source de leur réussite;
  • les plus importants pièges qui peuvent faire passer une personne prometteuse de héros à zéro;
  • la manière d’optimiser le développement des personnes à haut potentiel tout en maintenant la flamme...

Application pratique – Cette conférence proposera des pistes concrètes pour implanter une culture d’excellence dans l’ensemble des pratiques de gestion des ressources humaines.

Tod Maffin, Expert on the Impact of Technology
Vancouver, Canada

With absenteeism growing and lowered job satisfaction scores across the country, do we need a radical new way of providing mental health services to our employees? Can we, as managers, reverse the damage our multi-tasking demanding world is inflicting on employees? Tod Maffin thinks so.

Once the founder and CEO of a multi-million dollar technology firm, Tod’s workload and always-on personality finally caught up with him and over the following years, he was crippled by a devastating depression and addiction — all the while struggling to appear to be productive to employers and colleagues, and happy and healthy to his friends and family.

In this provocative SuperSession, Tod will reveal how this always-connected landscape has seduced all of us into endless multitasking and infinite email — all the while pretending that this increasing workload is the best thing for “productivity”. In fact, this hyper-connected economy may be both destroying the productivity of workplaces and eroding the mental health of companies’ most valuable asset: their people.

Tod will outline his own bold strategy for bringing mental health discussion out of the shadows in a way that will challenge your attendees for years to come.

Tod’s story is emotional… at once funny and poignant, sad and hopeful. Join us for a raw, thought-provoking and powerful presentation that will leave you inspired and motivated for change!

Workplace application – This exclusive 3-hour session will walk you through an inspirational example of fighting back, recovery in action, and learning how to live sanely in our busy techno-driven life. Tod will show you how to be more productive, profitable, and satisfied with life by using a new set of skills designed to reduce your email, wrangle your voicemails better, and prioritze your day.

E16 – Exploiting Chaos - How to Spark Innovation and Create a Culture of Revolution

Jeremy Gutsche, Innovation Expert, founder of Trend Hunter.com
Toronto, Canada

Chaos is the uncertainty sparked by uncharted territory, economic recession, and bubbles of opportunity. HR managers know best that chaos causes organizations to retreat. But that isn’t always true. For example, Disney, CNN, MTV, Hyatt, Burger King, FedEx, Microsoft, Apple, GE, and Hewlett-Packard were all founded during periods of economic recession. Periods of change create enormous opportunities, but only for those organizations that are structured to reinvent and change. With a contagious enthusiasm for innovation, Jeremy Gutsche will captivate the audience with vivid case studies, multimedia videos and interactive examples that will prepare your organization for a revolution.

Workplace application – This session will discuss how HR managers can create a culture of revolution and prepare their organization to spark innovation, identify opportunities and infectiously communicate.
