Rethinking HR Strategy: How the Net Generation is Changing Your World

The Internet is rapidly becoming a platform for enabling self-organization and communities. At the same time, the Net Generation has come of age, with its eldest members now turning 30. Together, these two shifts are forcing companies to rethink human resources strategies.

An enthralling and inspiring orator and an authority on the new world of enterprise, collaboration, innovation and value creation, Don Tapscott will share with us the fascinating findings of a $4 million landmark private research study that surveyed more than 11 000 young people and resulted in his most recent book, Grown Up Digital.

The Net Generation is the first generation to have literally grown up digital. They are using technology in ways you could never imagine. For the first time in history, youth are an authority on something really important. And they’re changing every aspect of our society, form the marketplace to workplace. If you understand the Net Generation, you will understand the future!

Even with the economic downturn, we’re on the brink of a major War for Talent as baby-boomers retire. To win this war, smart companies need new HR strategies.

  • Rethink recruitment; initiate relationships. Don’t waste money on advertising for talent. Use social networks based on trust to influence young people about your company.

  • Rethink training; engage for lifelong learning. Rather than traditional training programs that are separate from work, look to strengthen the learning component of all jobs.

  • Re-think management. New collaborative platforms enable a new modus operandi of work, resulting in dramatic improvements in performance.

Learn why the ability to integrate the talents of dispersed individuals and organizations is the defining competency for managers and firms.

Join us for this captivating, challenging and provocative opening keynote speech that promises to go beyond limits!

What CEOs want from HR

This unique keynote will challenge participants about the expectations organizations have of HR professionals and the HR function. It promises to be a valuable inspiration to help HR professionals move beyond boundaries and realize their full potential.

In the form of an in-depth interview conducted by renowned journalist Stéphan Bureau, the session will enable attendees to discover the CEOs of two world-class Canadian companies that have made innovation, performance, people and social responsibility some of their key concerns. The role of the CEO and expectations of the HR function will also be addressed. These issues in many ways mirror the Congress theme, “HR Without Limits.”

Sharing ideas in a high-calibre HR context, this session will aim to take things further and to highlight world-class organizations that know how to meet the challenges inherent in day-to-day innovation.

A unique encounter you won’t want to miss!

Developing organizations as communities

It is a great privilege for us to welcome Professor Henry Mintzberg, one of the world’s most influential management thinkers.

In a unique and exclusive in-depth interview with Stéphan Bureau, Professor Mintzberg will illustrate how leadership may be better viewed as stemming from communityship, and how this has been stimulated by a number of initiatives in management development that takes it to organization and social development, and back to self development.

According to Professor Mintzberg, the depreciation of the sense of community in organizations has damaging and lasting effects. When there is no sense of community, individuals act out of self interest instead of focusing on developing the effectiveness of their organization as a whole. Employees do not feel bound to each other or to their organization. How can organizations ever become more productive and develop as a whole this way? The answer is that they can't. And Professor Mintzberg believes that this is at the heart of the economic downturn. That is why communityship now needs to be reinforced within organizations more than ever.

Leadership and communityship go hand-in-hand. Professor Mintzberg will also speak about leadership and how it has become perceived as something separate and superior to management. This view only isolates those in leadership positions, and thus undermines the sense of community in organizations. A community leader is personally engaged in order to engage others, so that anyone and everyone can exercise initiative.

The interview will conclude with Professor Mintzberg reaffirming that organizations need to understand that they must develop and strengthen community within the organization in order to create a healthy society that balances leadership, communityship, and citizenship.

An outstanding encounter not to be missed and one that will help us go beyond leadership…

Passion and Determination

Chantal Petitclerc’s story is an extraordinary one that took a teenager to world’s greatest track and field stadiums. Her story is that of a young girl who became a paraplegic after an accident and who decided to embrace life with a positive attitude, strength, determination, discipline and courage, and, above all, never to admit defeat.

These qualities became her best allies in her career as an athlete. She put them to work for her in her new passion – sports. Sports not only allowed her to dream big dreams, but also to attain them by setting realistic goals, working hard and doing her very best, through minor disappointments and major victories. These are the qualities of a good athlete, it’s true, but they’re also the qualities required for any personal success.

A warm and cultured speaker, Chantal Petitclerc talks about the lessons she’s learned that have propelled her to the top of the podium, relating interesting and amusing anecdotes along the way.

Join us to hear this exceptional athlete share her personal vision of the effort and achievement that can continually take us beyond our own limits.

A presentation that is sure to leave no one indifferent!

Managing the Extraordinary: The Challenge of Cirque du Soleil

Enter into the wings of a circus that’s open to the world…

The unique shows of Cirque du Soleil stir the imagination, stimulate the senses and appeal to the emotions of audiences the world over.

While a major part of the Cirque’s success is due to the remarkable talent of its artists, it is also based on the creativity, passion and desire to push the boundaries of its employees. Together they form an extraordinary organizational community whose members come from around the world to meet the challenges facing this organization with exceptional determination. This community operates according to rules that have been adapted to its environment, within a creative, sensitive and organic organization. The Cirque thus approaches typical human resources issues from a different perspective.

In fact, Cirque du Soleil talks about managing people and the organization rather than managing human resources. Closer to its day-to-day reality, this new term encourages greater development of flexible management models to respond to the ever-increasing challenges of a rapidly growing international organization.

The complex and fascinating world of Cirque du Soleil offers a model for managing people and the organization that forges control, chaos and movement into a dynamic working environment that in turn promotes creativity and results.

To dream, to dare and to push the limits… We can’t imagine a better way to close the World Congress than to hear impassioned professionals explain how the Cirque moves beyond borders, beyond the profession and beyond its own limits!

Note: The presentation will be in French (simultaneous translation available to English and Spanish).
